About
This official service provided by the South Australian Government allows individuals to apply for and obtain their driver’s licence history report. The report includes important licence details such as expiry date, status, type and class of licence, as well as the number of demerit points. Applicants can request a comprehensive driver’s licence history online via their mySAGOV account or in person at Service SA centres. Online applicants can conveniently download the report from their mySAGOV account, while in-person applicants receive a printed copy.
Additionally, licence holders with a mySAGOV account have the ability to securely share their licence details with another person or organisation (e.g., an employer), at no cost. This feature facilitates transparent verification by allowing shared access to key licence information for a selectable period of up to 12 months. Licence holders control and manage access approvals, with the option to extend or revoke sharing permissions at any time.
Using South Australia’s Driving History Service for Background Checks
This service is particularly useful for background checks involving driving credentials and related compliance verification:
- Verification of Licence Validity and Status: Employers and organisations can confirm that a prospective or current employee holds a valid South Australian driver licence, including details on licence type and expiry.
- Checking Demerit Points and Driving Record: Access to demerit points information helps assess a candidate’s driving behaviour and risk profile, which is critical for roles that involve driving responsibilities.
- Consent-Based Sharing: Since licence holders control sharing via their mySAGOV accounts, organisations can ensure they have lawful consent to access or verify personal licence information in line with privacy requirements.
- Recruitment and Ongoing Monitoring: Employers can use this service to perform due diligence during hiring and periodically thereafter, contributing to safer workplaces and risk mitigation.
- Convenient and Secure Access: The ability to download reports online or share licence details digitally streamlines the background checking process, reducing administrative delays.
Important Notes:
- There is a fee for applying for the full licence history report, except for checking demerit points, which can be done at no cost.
- Sharing licence details requires the licence holder’s action and approval through their mySAGOV account, ensuring privacy and control over personal data.
By incorporating the South Australian driver licence history into background checks, organisations can make informed decisions and comply with legal and safety standards related to driving roles.
