About
Service NSW offers a secure online service for NSW driver licence holders and former licence holders to request a copy of their driving record. A driving record is a comprehensive history of traffic offences associated with a driver’s licence, detailing infringements and penalties.
Users can choose between two types of driving records:
- Uncertified Driving Record: Available immediately upon purchase, this record provides a summary of offences but is not admissible in legal proceedings. It is accessible for download and remains available for 7 days from the transaction.
- Certified Driving Record: This official record is suitable for use as evidence in legal proceedings and for licence disqualification applications. Certified records are mailed to the driver’s registered NSW postal address within 10 to 14 business days after the request. Ordering a certified record also includes access to the uncertified version.
To access the service online, users must have a MyServiceNSW account and provide their NSW driver licence details or vehicle registration plate number if applicable. For those unable to order online, a PDF application form is available for submission in person or by post, along with proof of identity and payment.
Using NSW Driving Records in Background Checks
The driving record service is a critical resource for employers and organisations conducting background checks where driving history and traffic compliance are important factors:
- Verification of Driving History: Employers can request an individual’s driving record (with their consent) to verify any history of traffic offences, helping assess reliability and risk related to road safety.
- Legal and Compliance Screening: Certified driving records can support lawful verification processes in sectors where driving qualifications and clean driving records are mandatory.
- Hiring and Risk Management: Reviewing past infringements and penalties forms an essential component of due diligence for roles involving driving or operating vehicles, contributing to safer workplace environments.
- Evidence for Legal and Disciplinary Actions: Certified records serve as official proof in legal cases or administrative procedures regarding licence suspensions or disqualifications.
- Self-monitoring: Individuals can obtain uncertified records instantly to monitor their own driving history and demerit points, promoting proactive compliance.
Important Considerations:
- A certified record is necessary for formal legal or administrative use and is only available by postal delivery.
- Access requires valid identity verification and, for employers, should be conducted with the driver’s consent to comply with privacy laws.
- Payment is required to obtain these records via Service NSW.
By incorporating driving record checks from Service NSW, organisations and individuals can better manage risks related to driving offences and ensure adherence to relevant regulations.
