About
The South Australian Working with Children Check (WWCC) is a mandatory screening process for individuals seeking to work or volunteer in child-related roles within South Australia. It is designed to help protect children from harm by assessing the suitability of applicants through rigorous background checks and ongoing monitoring.
Who Needs a WWCC?
Anyone who works, or intends to work, as an employee or volunteer in child-related areas must hold a valid WWCC. It is an offence to engage in child-related work without one.
Validity and Renewal
WWCC clearances are valid for five years. Applicants should apply for renewal within six months of expiry to continue working without disruption. Eligible applicants may be allowed to work during the renewal application process, known as ‘work on re-application’. Eligibility should be confirmed with employers or volunteer organisations.
Application Process
Individuals can apply for a WWCC either as an individual worker or, if representing a business or employer, via a different application pathway. Before applying, applicants should verify whether they already hold a valid WWCC using their Unique ID (SRN). Support is available if applicants are unsure of their status.
Continuous Monitoring and Obligations
After clearance is granted, ongoing monitoring by SA Police and the Department for Child Protection ensures that any new relevant information is assessed promptly. Both workers and employers have legal duties to notify the Screening Unit of changes such as name or address updates, prohibition notices from other jurisdictions, or new criminal charges. Failure to report such changes can attract significant penalties.
